Robert J. Murphy

Robert J. Murphy is a founding shareholder of Murphy & Riley, P.C. He started his legal career in 1980 as an associate attorney at Murphy & Mitchell, P.C., an insurance defense firm the principal of which, Walter G. Murphy, was one of the most well-respected trial lawyers in Boston. Together with Walter and Rick Riley, Bob established Murphy & Riley, P.C. in May 1993. The firm, which started out with five attorneys, has grown steadily to its current size and scope.

Bob has a broad history of litigation experience, representing insurance companies, their insureds and self-insureds for over 30 years. He has tried over fifty cases to a verdict in state and federal court in Massachusetts involving professional liability, product liability, non-profits and national trucking companies, among many other claims. He has argued appeals in every appellate court in the Commonwealth.

Bob’s practice primarily involves the representation of not for profit entities. He has represented and counseled numerous entities in hundreds of cases throughout Massachusetts on a wide range of issues including wrongful death, sexual assault, prescription errors, state administrative investigations, criminal assaults and numerous other matters.

A significant amount of his practice also includes the defense of accounting, legal, and social worker professionals in malpractice claims and before their respective state licensing boards. He has represented such professionals both personally and through their insurers. Bob also represents two major trucking companies throughout Massachusetts.

Bob also has a significant insurance coverage practice. His practice involves not only the traditional policy interpretation and coverage litigation matters but, increasingly, oversight of Cumis counsel.
